What inspires you to wake up every day and keep making a difference in the respective industry you are catering to?

As an interior designer, I hear this question often. It’s one I love to answer because I’m continually absorbing new information to guide my aesthetic. Though I can find inspiration almost anywhere, the designers and architects and their distinctive styles have influenced my design aesthetic. I find inspiration from both architecture and nature while walking around the city, browsing through design blogs & magazines, and brainstorming with coworkers.

Travel exposes you to new cultures, people, and experiences. By immersing yourself in an area that’s far from home, you break out of your comfort zone and open your eyes to new possibilities in your creative projects. Another place is outdoors on nature hikes; I do a lot of research to see what’s new on the market and, to be honest. Social media, of course, is the source of much inspiration for designers and others through sites like Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and others. Pinterest is a daily source for me especially during the research period of a project where you can find incredibly unique design, illustration, photography, and references. Instagram is also a great source for design inspiration.

As the CEO of your company, what challenges have you faced while establishing and running the business?

Managing costs is one of the most difficult tasks for any company. The most difficult task for most interior design companies is keeping track of material costs. If a project takes longer than expected or if a client changes their mind halfway through, labour costs may quickly escalate out of control. Interior design companies also face cash-flow issues in addition to cost management. For this reason, many interior designers need deposits before beginning work: They need the funds to buy materials and pay staff to complete the project.

The most difficult aspect of the project is locating the necessary materials, furnishings, and accessories. Finding unique goods that suit well in their client’s design project is a difficult task.

Sometimes clients aren’t too sure about what they want the finished product to look like. As interior designers, it’s our job to help guide them through the creative process. Creating a mood board also really helps to communicate your interpretation of what the client is asking for visually. Managing your clients’ standards is an important aspect of interior design, and it’s never simple.

1. Describe your professional journey as an inspiring CEO.

My journey has been a roller coaster since it started, and I think that’s what has helped me to learn and execute the right things and to also achieve the trust of the directors and the team in the organisation to have achieved this post. After my professional qualification, despite being into family business of salons, I was made to start as an assistant in the salon. From there, there was no looking back.

Working and acting as a salon manager to a technical person then a trainer my journey went on and on. Later, I was chosen to be the managing director and my roles were more into developing operations and sales. I was promoted as a CEO after a span of 10 years and trust me being the CEO of an organization is not an easy job. But being called upon as one of the inspirational CEOs to be mentioned is an absolute honour.

2. Who inspires you to wake up every day and keep making a difference in the respective industry you are catering to?

I think continuous innovation and learning through the failures is what I have experienced so far. Amongst 3 siblings, I feel blessed that I got an opportunity to carry the legacy ahead, but it was never my dream to someday be a CEO or not, but I guess my dedication, passion, honest efforts and understanding and catering the minor details of this business, made my Mother and the company trust me and to reward me with this position.

3. As the CEO of your company, what challenges have you faced while establishing and running the business?

The difficult part of the job is the journey that I came across to be a CEO.

Through ups and downs, I have experienced throughout this journey of 10 years that it takes so much patience and appropriate team members to successfully run an organisation.

I think majority Of the CEOs and many others face a hell of a lot of challenge and rose to the occasion to meet it. For me as well, at times there were high risks but I knew that the high reward was worth it. Making a difference in the world whether it is in the company or developing an amazing venture and helping people grow alongside is what has kept me motivated to take up this position and I try my 200% to justify the same each day.

Even with the vaccine mobilized, the after-effects of the pandemic have not completely left the global business paradigm.

Tackling these challenges head-on is a business leader Jai Mulani, the CEO of IBT. The company has always planned and spoke about digital transformation, but this situation accelerated it. It had to change / remove / add many strategies throughout this time and continue and still grow during these times.

In an interview with Insights Success business solutions magazine, Mr. Jai Mulani shares about his journey, challenges, achievements, and future goals.

Jai allowed all employees to work from home with same level of support, KPIs and SLAs delivered to all customers. To support customers, he also offered free support for a month up to three months for customers who were financially impacted hard by pandemic.

It was 2009, when Jai started his company with not much money in his bank account. The recession was at its peak when he started IBT and every month was a challenge till end of 2010 when he and his team moved out of survival mode and later it moved towards their growth trajectory.  “My ambitions and my dreams are the source of my inspiration to work and raise the bar every day,” says Jai.

Jai’s business was bootstrapped and he did not go for any loan or raising funds from VCs. Due to this, he had to face the two most challenging aspects of the business he is involved in, namely:

  1. People: As the company was small, policies and procedures, office infrastructure and employment benefits were also less because of which retaining people that time was very difficult. Every employee wants to work for established business where they are more secured, processes are in place and their profile is more structured. Because IBT was small company in 2009 – 2010, it was difficult for Jai to retain talent. But he did his best to materialize his vision and explained it to people. “Today we still have some of people with us on board who joined during those times,” states Jai.
  2. Fund Management: It was very challenging to rotate funds and survive those difficult times when Jai did not have much cash in the bank account. During 2009 recession hit hard to every company so all large or medium business who survived recession wanted credit terms with lowered So, it was real challenging to evaluate projects and forecasting of payment cycle. But he was successful to manage and survive those times.

You are born on this earth to help countless other mothers who do not have a son like you.” This statement changed the young Sunderam’s outlook on life, and he made a promise of helping the suffering mothers and their child in the best way he can.

Sunderam became India’s first married couples’ relationship expert and mentor applying the mind reprogramming skills as an alternative to counseling session and saved many young mothers from the trap of negative thoughts that once consumed him and his mother’s life.
